Design Magnifique’s Holiday party / Toy Drive – December 2011

Design Magnifique (DM) is proud to announce that on December 1, 2011 had their first Holiday party and Toys for Tots toy drive. Past and new clients, family members and friends gathered to help support Design Magnifique in their mission of donating unwrapped toys to the USMC. What was particular different about their toy drive was that DM focused on gathering toys for teenagers. After all, teenagers deserve toys too.

“While most people translate “Toys for Tots” into, toys for little ones, they tend to forget about the teenagers. Therefore we wanted to focus on them”, states Marilyn Russell, President and Principal Designer of Design Magnifique. DM’s mission paid off. They successful collective an array of toys including iTunes gift cards, basketballs, Books, cologne, perfume, make-up kits for girls, movies and games. DM certainly made sure that teenagers had a happy and very Merry Christmas.

Toys for Tots are a great program organized by the USMC.

MISSION:
The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

GOAL:
The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. 

OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

ACTIVITIES:
The principal Toys for Tots activity, which takes place each year is the collection and distribution of toys in the communities in which a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located. In communities without a Reserve Unit, the campaign can be conducted by a Marine Corps League Detachment or group of men and women, generally veteran Marines, authorized by Marine Toys for Tots

Foundation to conduct a local Toys for Tots campaign. Local Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators conduct an array of activities throughout the year, which include golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle races and other voluntary events designed to increase interest in Toys for Tots, and concurrently generate toys and monetary donations.

Those of you out there who love books as much I do, know that after a while organizing your book collection can get a little overwhelming, especially since books come in so many different colors, sizes, and formats.

Several words come to mind when thinking of a man-pad: solitude, escape, release, rejuvenate and cerebro. Just like girls, guys need their space too. I think our space actively captures the essence of those descriptive words.

So with that being said, we’ve realized for a long time that guys do not like things fussy. You like your electrical gadgets while at the same time, want your pad to look good. We get it! Too much stuff to step over, dust or put away is a huge no-no.

Our 5 drop-dead design rules for a man-pad:

1. Keep it simple and comfortable. No fluff in terms of pillows and/or curtains. Try solar shades for a clean look. Furniture needs to be flexible and comfortable for all those future football and gaming parties.
2. Keep colors limited in terms of splash here and there; nothing outrageously bold or obnoxious.
3. Design the space with gadgets in mind. Guys love their toys, i.e. playstation, xbox, Apple gadgets and/or electronics. It’s all about the man toys.
4. The flooring finish should look good and easy to maintain. Think in terms of hardwood, tile or cork (you’d be surprised how durable this product is).
5. Less furniture – just the essentials are necessary.

For one thing, you don’t have to remove all the furniture out of the room to install the carpet, since you can do it in stages. Also, you don’t need pads, tracks, or glue, so you can change the look of a space without ruining your floor.

Another advantage: carpet tiles are so easy to clean. If you spill something you can remove that tile, clean it up, and put it back; or you can just replace that one tile.

But here is what Design Magnifique likes the most about carpet tiles: you can create funky, original, innovative designs, and completely change the look of a space according to your own style. It’s a carpet no one else will have! (unless they copy your design, that is)

But remember, if you are looking for a more traditional look, you can also pick a solid color or something with a lot of texture (like sisal), and you will have the best of both worlds: a seamless looking carpet with all the functionality of carpet tiles.
